Abbazia di Casamari

The abbey of Casamari was built between 1005 and 1036 on the ruins of the ancient Roman municipality called Cereatae, being dedicated to the goddess Ceres, at Marianae, for it was the birthplace, or at least a residence, of Caius Marius, from whom the abbey later derived its name. The documents witness the presence of a Benedectine monastic community in the 11th century, under the name of Casamari. Visiting the abbey you will have the opportunity to access the archaeological museum, consisting mainly of material from the Roman era; to the library which has about 50,000 historical and spiritual volumes. The Casamari Abbey is one of the oldest Italian monuments of Gothic-Cistercian art, it denotes a complementary style different from the construction canons of the monumental art of the time. Inspired by the Burgundian architecture of France, the style is functional and simple, typical of the Cistercian order.

Alatri

Alatri was one of the centers of the -Ernici-, an ancient Italic population whose territory was located in Lazio between the Liri valley and the Sacco valley. Founded in the 16th century BC, always a faithful ally of Rome and its territorial conquests, it obtained a privileged position which favored a beneficial cultural and economic development. From this pact of alliance with Rome the motto was born: Vetustissima et Fidelissima Civitas Alatrensis. Alatri boasts churches of great value and ancient unique architectural structures, to name a few: the Acropolis, the Basilica of San Paolo Apostolo, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Christ in the labyrinth in the Church of San Francesco, Palazzo Conti Gentili and the Church of the Scolopi.
